The tutors provided by Options In Learning are compassionate and clear with students and families and often form supportive bonds that last for many years. The success of Options In Learning is also due to the thorough evaluation process that I, Laura Berkowitz, have created that allows me to match students with experts who make dramatic differences for students. This process begins with compassionate listening to parents, students and teachers. This is done on the telephone and in face-to-face meetings with all parties who can help me understand what a student’s educational history has been and where it has fallen short. Next, I design a program that will fill in the gaps and provide the student with the precise type of teaching that will enable him or her to make the educational gains desired. I then match students with a tutor who has the training required and can accommodate the student’s and family’s schedule.
Careful monitoring is another tool that insures success. Via e-mail, tutors send me weekly descriptions of all tutorial sessions. I read these lesson summaries carefully making sure the student is progressing and meeting their educational goals. These lesson summaries are also sent to parents so they, too know exactly what is being accomplished. This level of communication is yet another layer that insures excellence.
There can never be enough communication in education. Thus, I check in with parents regularly about how they and their child are feeling about tutorials. When possible, I and the tutors maintain relationships with the child’s classroom teacher. This communication may take the form of informal chats, regular face-to-face meetings or telephone and e-mail contact. Some teachers request weekly lesson summaries via e-mail, as well.
